Quite close to Taltal there is a mountain
peak by the name of Mt.
Perales. To get to the top you will need a 4x4 vehicle as the "road"
leading up the mountain is quite steep in some cases and with holes as
well. The top of Mt. Perales is, when it comes to plants very
interesting because it seems that there is something going on in the
genetic melting kettle where Copiapoa
cinerea and Copiapoa
tenebrosa are
showing great variation. A spot that again reminds us of how
difficult it sometimes is to separate one species from another. We were
lucky to visit this site in full sunshine with a great view into the
Atacama desert - if you are unlucky the top can be wrapped in fog.
