From
Caleta Botija to Taltal there is about 35 - 40 kilometres but the
primitive road is feeling quite a bit longer. Some places there is
hardly any road left due to the unexpected rainfalls in the spring
2003 in the mountains. The gorges (quebradas) unite and concentrate these actually sparse amounts of water from huge mountain-areas and the result is often a heavy stream of water from each of the quebradas across the road further on to the Pacific, sometimes only a few hundred meters away. In some places the road is so devastated that we need to connect our 4x4 gear and slowly cross the obstacles which may also be great trucks stranded in holes of mud. On our way south to Paposo we found Copiapoa haseltoniana , Copiapoa humilis and Copiapoa eremophila. Copiapoa haseltoniana is increasing it´s size all the way to Paposo and prefer to grow on the terrain between the road and the sea - sometimes that close to the water that some influence from salt is hardly to avoid. The plants thrive only from the camanchaca which comes in daily from the pacific. The downpour of rain is measured to 0 mm per annum. |
