South of Paposo Copiapoa haseltoniana still dominate the terrain to the Pacific. On your left hand of the
road, on the steep slopes, we suddenly see some real big - almost
gigantic plants. Copiapoa gigantea
seem unreal - incredible to grow to this size in such a dry
environment. On the slopes there are hardly any other plants. For
certain these plants are very old and perhaps they started their growth
many hundred years ago when the climate was more humid than today? Are
they the last plants of a population sentenced to extinction in the
years to come? |
